There is a general list of primary macronutrients and micronutrients your lawn needs to get from the soil in order to perform optimally. Those would be as follows: Nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and boron.
So, how do you know what fertilizer to put down to ensure that your lawn gets what it needs? This is where the idea of a soil test comes in - to show you what is in your soil so that you can understand what it needs to become its healthiest and provide it, such as fertilizer.
Collecting a sample for a soil test is easy peasy!

The results of your soil test will tell you what your lawn is lacking, what macronutrients and/or micronutrients you need to be looking for in a fertilizer to bring it to its optimal health.
