The idea behind a winterizer is to apply a blast of heavy nitrogen late in the season just before the ground freezes or snoozes for its winter nap. This final application of the season will prep your turf for a stellar start in the spring.
COOL-SEASON LAWNS:
For cool-season lawns, apply your winterizer after your last mow, right around the time your soil temperatures fall into the 40s. You won’t be mowing anymore at that point, maybe just raking leaves, but the ground won’t be frozen yet, so there isn’t a risk of a sticking snow cover. That’s the key: soil temps in the 40s.
If you are a fan of throwing down, we recommend our granular 20-0-6 Flagship fertilizer as your winterizer choice. Packed with 24% nitrogen, your lawn will be ready to take off as soon as spring has sprung. You can grab a bag on your own, or you can bundle and save by picking up our Cool Season Winterizer Pack This pack also includes a quart of 0-0-1 Humic12 and a quart of 0-0-5 AIR-8 which work together to drive and strengthen your roots in preparation for dormancy, kind of how a good ole grizzly bear gets fattened up and strong before hibernating so he can wake up strong and ready for spring.
If you would rather spray and pray your winterizer, you can grab some 26-0-0 GreeneCharge, and apply this at 16oz/1,000. GreeneCharge is packed with a punch of nitrogen goodness to give your turf a hearty push when it wakes up.
WARM-SEASON LAWNS:
For those of you who do not get snow, we still suggest winter fertilizing. Our strategy is to go higher in potassium because that is the macronutrient that helps lawns through stress. The best granular way to get it is by throwing down our 7-0-20 Stress Blend. It’s 20% potassium, and the 7% nitrogen is 100% slow release so it isn’t going to do anything crazy to push growth as we move into winter. You will want to apply this after your final mowing of the season.
You can pick up a bag of Stress Blend to wrap up your season or grab a Warm-Season Winterizer Pack. This pack also includes a quart of 0-0-1 Humic12 and a quart of 0-0-5 AIR-8. These 3 products work together to prep your turf for take-off in the spring as they are great for strengthening your roots and driving them deep, helping your lawn get through the stress of fall and winter.
If you are looking for a liquid winterizer option for your warm-season turf, look no further than 0-0-25 GreeneKick. You will want to apply this two times over the next 6 weeks or so at the rate of 5oz/1,000 to get it into the soil.
