When you select to have your soil test inform your lawn program you may notice that your fertilizer applications are quite different from what you are used to. The regular lawn program is a generic program based on soil temperature and growing season logic that we have seen great success with. We push higher nitrogen fertilizers, such as Flagship, during peak growing periods and spoon-feed the lawn during stressful periods.
With the soil test-informed program, we can tailor those recommendations to what your lawn is starving for. Low in nitrogen? Feed that lawn Flagship or Freedom. Low in potassium? Time to feast on some Stress Blend. Low in all N-P-K nutrients? Starter Fert is here to save the day.
Think of the general lawn plan like the food pyramid. If you stick to the right amount of carbs, protein, dairy, and fruits and vegetables you’ll have a healthy diet. Now let’s say you go to the doctor and take a blood test and an allergen test. You get your results and you are low in Iron. The doctor is going to recommend you eat more red meat than what the food pyramid suggests. Or perhaps you’re allergic to gluten so your carb intake is going to be altered. This is what the soil test-informed program is doing. It is adjusting the generic lawn plan to better fit your lawn’s specific needs.
Now some of you long-time cool-season Lawn Care Nuts are thinking “Hold the phone! I don’t want to apply high nitrogen fertilizer in the summer and push my lawn too hard, I need my Stress Blend.” Or you warm-season folks are questioning why you aren’t going for it with high nitrogen blasts in the summer? If this worries you, you can stick with the general lawn program and you are still going to dominate! Just know that you will not burn your lawn if you follow the custom plan as that program is based on your specific lawn so we no longer need to generalize your recommendations.
