Soil testing is an awesome artillery item in defending your turf as it allows you to see exactly what nutrients your lawn currently lacks or might need a good dose of to get it moving in a healthier, more dominating direction. You will find that literally any time is a great time to take a soil test as long as your ground isn't frozen and/or you haven't applied any fertilizer in the last 30 - 45 days.
The idea of a soil test is to get a baseline of what nutrients are in your soil. Based on that, you will know which direction to press forward in your lawn care journey and you can start that custom journey any time of the year.
We typically recommend completing one to two soil tests a year. Of course, you can take more than that, but we don't want you to get analysis paralysis, where you are so consumed by the numbers that you don't let your instincts and observations of your lawn kick in.
Many DIYers like to take a soil test at the beginning of the season to point them in the right direction for the upcoming growing season. Then there are some lawn care nuts that like to take a soil test at the end of the year as well so they can see all the progress they made over the season.
That doesn't mean taking your soil test in July, for example, is bad or wrong! Learning your land any time of the year is absolutely a good thing!
Remember, those nutrient levels are constantly changing as you feed your lawn and as the roots absorb and utilize those nutrients. So if you are low in nitrogen and when you test again you are still low, don't worry your work was not for nothing! Your lawn was just taking in everything you were throwing down and using it. That is why you see results!
