Besides watering, mowing your grass is the single most important thing you, as a DIY Lawn Farmer, can do.
The difference is that with watering, we get a lot of help from natural rain but with mowing, it’s all on you, 100% of the time.
For the bulk of the season, we recommend mowing every 3-4 days to keep your turf at the recommended heights as shown below. As your turf slows down in the fall (and winter for you southerners) you won't need to mow as often to maintain those recommended heights.
You will make the most improvement in your lawn by just getting your mowing consistent and frequent.
As a general reminder, here are the recommended mowing heights for each grass type:
- Kentucky Bluegrass: 3-4”
- Perennial Ryegrass: 3-4”
- Turf Type Tall Fescue: 4”+
- St Augustine: 4”+
- Centipede: 3”
- Zoysia: 1-2”
- Bermuda: 1-2”
If you are brand new to lawn care and are just learning, you should absolutely mow your grass at the recommended heights here and stay within those boundaries.
It will make your life much easier.
